How much do 83/84 H/O wheels go for?
The wheels on my Hurst are in bad shape, one doesn't even hold air. How much have these been selling for when they come up? I think I am gona put Torque thrust on it for now. Thanks Jackson
Loaded question. Whatever the market will bear is the correct answer. Anything else is just guessing. Sometimes you roll up on a deal and other times people have lost their minds on asking prices.
Original 83/84 15x7 Hurst/Olds chrome wheels were clear coated. Sometimes the coating held up and didn't fog or peel and look like crap. Many did. Peeling off the coating made them look new again. they learned their lesson for 85-87 442 wheels as they did not chrome them.
It's real easy to tell an aftermarket wheel from a genuine GM wheel. For one, the GM hoop is stamped with 15x7 JJ and made in Canada. Also the center section is 360 degree welded unlike the aftermarkets which are just hit in 5 places normally. Not all the way around. The center sections are re-used centers on the aftermarkets, so they will accept GM center caps. Not quite so easy to see is the air valve isn't quite as angled into the groove as the originals and the backspacing isn't 4" like originals. Aftermarkets are like 4.25" BS which sticks the cap out a bit more than normal. The sad thing is, many of the wheel re-builders quit doing them for lack of center section availability.
If your centers are still good, you MAY can find someone who rebuilds wheels to re-hoop your centers. I know that's extreme, but it's an option. Or if you find a 14x6 chrome wheel, they share the same center sections with the 15" wheels and get those re-hooped.
There was a place in Texas somewhere who rechromed the entire rim as it sat without taking it apart. They did it for someone's 69 H/O wheels. Can't recall who/when or even if they are still in business.
Even after all that, you would need to repaint the center section inlays an argent silver, and re-pinstripe the perimeter of the rim with 3M Tomato Red 3/16" stripe tape.
