Is this real or a fake?

So, I have been looking for another Hurst, and found this "84" for sale, claiming he has this but it's painted the 83 colors. Now, I had an 83, but I never knew that there was an 84 painted this way. Can anybody verify this for me, or know how I can? He's not asking to terribly outrageous much for it, but like the saying goes...if it sounds to good to be true...

Interesting, Im sure you can contact the hurst olds registry and find out. id say more likely a repaint to the 83 color scheme.

I've seen at least one 84 H/O that was repainted in the 83 paint scheme.

I've also seen one 83 painted red with a replacement VIN on the door frame....kind of made me wonder....

I read it as a repaint....3000 produced 1983 colors one....

I will admit the whole ad is lacking and vague at best

3001 actually in '83.

84 was 3500.

The VIN checks out as an 84 H/O. 9 engine code.

Plus the last 6 digits puts in somewhere in the Feburary 84 builds.

No 84 was painted 83 colors from the factory to anyone's knowledge. Linda Vaughn got a white one from Hurst, but it wasn't an actual production one.

There were several 84s that did get black hood bulges and black spoilers around the end of February. Some just had a black scoop. I helped Judy B. try to chase down several of those cars many years ago. No rhyme or reason what that was all about, but apparently it was a real thing.

Ya. Now you see why I'm so confused. This guy also has an 83, but it has manual windows...🤔 I never knew those to have manual. I thought they were all power?? Something is sketchy with this individual. Just want to see what everybody thinks before I replace my broken heart with a replacement.. lol

Power windows were an option. Manual side window cranks were standard equipment.

If anyone can get a close look at the car...there should be a cowl tag with the upper/lower body color on it (17L and 17U silver code) and a SPID with the 17L and 17U paint code on it as well as W40 in both places. If they were black, they'd say they were 12L and 12U. I doubt it.

That said, the cowl tag also should have an "E" stamped in the upper LH corner signifying 84 model year (D for 83).

Not saying things can't be faked, but that claim doesn't hold much water in my opinion.

I think there was a modified 84 H/O in one of the Hot Rod magazines years ago and they painted it to look like an 83. Whatever. At least they weren't posing.

No, I think OP hasn't even seen the car yet. Unless you get very, very lucky, you end up paying full price one way or the other. Either big money and no issues, or less money and issues.

You are correct. I have only seen pictures, and the individual has not responded to me on any of my questions yet, which is more disturbing. I'm getting frustrated because I've got the money available to me to buy one or the other, and I'd rather have the '83, which is what I had for 17 years and sold 8 years ago, but if I can't get an answer, I'll be looking elsewhere. The guy claims the '83 only has 18,000 original miles and a fresh paint job, which I questioned if those miles could be documented, but I understand the paint job because the original paint on those are iffy at best. I'll keep the post updated, unless you all know of an '83 that's clean that I can get my hands on. I live in central Kansas and am willing to go practically anywhere for one.

I'd walk on, friend. We'll be here for you no matter which one you buy. There's a Hurst Olds Club of America, which has a facebook page and website. The facebook page is very active and people can point you at whatever you want or need.

The VIN shows that this is clearly a 1984 H/O. There is no fuzz on that. The "9" in the eighth position is the proof. Only H/Os got the VIN 9 engine. Yeah, the "1981" in the ad is a typo.

GM did NOT break down much on RPOs as to production numbers, save for major things like VIN specific information (such as how many W40 with the VIN 9 engine cars were made in the Cutlass line), colors, powertrains (automatic or manual transmissions for example, if the car line had both), stuff like that. They did NOT care about CF5 (electric sun/astro/moonroof whichever you want to call it) or CC1 T-top options, and even G80 (limited slip). The only way you'd be able to do that is look at all the options that were on all 3500 cars and start compiling your own list. And as far as I know, nobody's been given permission to rifle through the records to do that, although several volunteers have asked.
