'84 Hurst with 403 and black interior

Hi guys,
I am looking at possibly buying a car from a fellow member here. It has been repainted, but no stripes. The original engine is long gone, but it has a rebuilt 403 in it now. A previous owner to the seller switched some of the interior to black, but never finished reinstalling it. So I would be purchasing a Hurst Olds that needs stripes installed and the interior reinstalled. I don't want to publish the selling price for respect to the seller. If he wants to chime in and add something here, more power to him. My main question is what would a Hurst in this condition be worth. I imagine the wrong engine and wrong interior hurt the value some, not that they are super valuable in the first place.
Thanks,
Jon

The 403 would increase the value in my book. The black interior, not so much.

Lol Jon I think you already know given your above statement. I love those cars, but realistically they don't command big bucks except for the few that are super low miles original condition ones.

That said I believe the value would depend on the condition, no rust? Paint decent or better, mostly complete most everything works? Maybe 4-6k.

I would say a modified HO is probably = ish to the 442 s of the same era.

For reference I sold an 85 442 last year, ran and drove mostly original but needed lots of tlc and had rusty floors (t tops), but fenders and quarters were good, the car looked good from 10 feet, $2500, the buyer has a thread on here w some pics. I'll try to find and link to it. I think we both got a fair deal at that price.

Edit hers a link to the buyers thread. https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...tml#post713566

I tend to agree with this.

The interior is an obvious right in your face thing - no way around it not being maple red anymore.

Making the 403 look like the original 307 to a casual & not so knowledgeable observer - not so tough if one were motivated & creative enough.

But if you're not concerned with 100% originality & chasing points at Olds meets/shows .....

And there are no ugly surprises & it's priced right - I say go for it.

One doesn't even need to be terribly creative.

Black paint, A4 intake, and a rat's nest of vacuum hoses and 99% of the people are fooled. Grind off the big "403" on the side of the block and pick up another 0.5%. Talk to Chris Witt about doctoring the casting numbers and you have a 100-point car.

I tend to agree with you guys as well. I think the 403 actually helps the car a little, while the interior hurts it quite a bit I think. Well it sounds like his selling price isn't too far off the mark. Who knows I can always post a parts wanted thread for the maple interior once I get the car and return it to factory. Like I said I know they aren't super valuable, but I think they are slightly more valuable than a 85-87 442 just because of limited numbers. I won't have to worry about the floor rust this is a hard top car got to add to the rarity.
Thanks,
Jon

Hi RetroRanger! I'm still on here and I'm still enjoying the 442! I just got it out of winter storage this week and drove it a few times. I put 3,000 miles on it last summer...all on those same old tires!!! LOL! Getting new tires this Spring is a priority.

Hey Steve

glad to see your still loving my car ...I want it back LOL. LMK when you get the new tires on then Ill take it back !!! I cant believe your still driving on those much less w 3 k miles...reality i just shoulda kept it but im glad its in good hands !

Jon

I dont think there is too much difference in production numbers IIRC the 442s were in the neighborhood of 4k units while the HOs were closer to 3k units. Either way sounds like your in the right price range for HO your looking at and the 403 should be decent upgrade as well.

Im keeping an eye out for another G body some time in the future for myself as well...

Retro, there's still a little tread left on them LOL! I only drive it when it's dry, so I didn't need much tread. I always wanted a G-body 442 and I'm glad I got an '85 (same drivetrain as the '83-'84 442). I've been bitten by the G-body bug and may eventually trade up to a nicer one, but I still want it to be black, but with gray interior. I've seen some nice drivers for around $5K lately. I'm sure I'll be enjoying this one for a few more years, though.

The 84 is more desirable in my book due to the 8.5" rear end. An 83 in mint shape with a gray interior may command the most being lower numbers made and 15th anniversary. Too bad Olds gave up on these cars, they came out with more horsepower than anyone else's 5L in 83 then only went down on power. Even the 200 HP version in the FE3X prototype would have been nice, 5 spd would have been cool with a Hurst shifter too. I should have waited to buy a 84 Hurst, my car has actually dropped in value here, by a couple grand unfortunately. I knew these cars would never bring big money but didn't think they would drop in value.
