1953 Oldsmobile Steering Column
I am having some problems with my shifter on my 1953 auto hydramatic steering column. I have recently actually fixed it for the time being, but I'm wondering if this is a common problem?
The internal part the shifter actually screws into is made from a very soft cast aluminum block that wraps around the shaft to shift from N to Dr and etc. That aluminum block has cracked and broke off leaving no where to screw the shifter in. I actually have a '53 parts car and it is broken the same way! On the parts car I noticed someone just welded a steel nut where that aluminum block was and screwed the shifter lever in that and it seems to work well.
So on mine i did the same and filed down the nut to get the right angle and concave for the the shifter lever. It is working great so far, Im just wondering if this is an on going problem, or is anyone else has a different fix for this?
Below Are some photos of what Im talking about. Thanks!
