Fuel tank sock... 66 Toronado
Fuel tank sock... 66 Toronado
Well, I dropped my gas tank on my '66 Toro, it had a pinhole leak.
I patched it up, and for good measure I painted the outside completely with POR15, and used their fuel tank sealer on the inside.
Unfortunately.... I didn't think about the fuel tank sock when I poured the sealer in. And, now it's ruined.
I had heard that GM still had NOS ones for alot of cars, but their catalogs don't go back that far, even if they had them, there's no way to look them up.
Went to o'Reily's to see what they had, and they've got these funny little wick-like filters that go on the end for a modern system. I'd be happy to use one of these, but none of them have an appropriate sized neck on them.
With my idea tank running towards empty, my last option that I can think of, is to go buy a washing machine lint sock and stick it on there with a hose clamp :P Really, it's not too different from what was on there, except maybe a little larger perforations. There's still the filter on the carb to catch what gets through that. And, with a sealed tank, there shouldn't ever be any debris in there...
Any other options I've overlooked? Or does anyone happen to have the original GM part number for this? Also, if you have a lookup for these things, could I get the part number for the proportioning valve on a '69 Toronado with front disc? I'm doing a conversion, and this is the only part of the equation I don't own.
Thanks

I just went through this with my 70 442 and found the same thing. No one has a listing for them. So I did a search on ebay and, though I didn't find one specifically listed for a "70 442", I did find some that looked just like my old one. They had various sized openings in the brass fittings so I measured my gas line and it was 3/8". So I took a shot and ordered a 3/8" sock. It fit perfectly. I guess, being an "aftermarket" item to the people now selling them, they haven't taken the time to research what cars each of their socks fit. So they don't even know.
Here's the link to the one I bought.

Not sure if this will help on the prop valve. This is from the "models thru 1969" book I have. I'll see if I can find my 67 book. My "66 thru 70" parts book has the exact same info. It's odd that next to 67, it doesn't list any specific models. That usually means ALL models. I wonder if the Toro was the ONLY model to have front discs in 67?

If the sock was in there when you poured sealer, I assume the entire send unit was as well? If so, I would expect that to be ruined, too. When you replace it, the new one should have a new sock.
