67 gas tank cap

so the story goes
Brand new gas tank for my 67 cutlass supreme. Lost both of my old caps. So I went to local parts store and bought the above cap.
unfortunately it will not go on. I can’t get the two (teeth if you will) far enuff into the tank neck seating area for me to twist it on.
Any thoughts?

I would venture to guess that since you installed a brand new tank, that the filler opening of the neck on the new tank isn't an exact match to an original '67, thus no cap advertised to fit a '67 will work. I'd contact the manufacturer of the new tank and ask them if they sell a cap that fits, or if they can point you to a manufacturer that does.

Lube the rubber gasket. I did this for a 66. Then, using a glove, work in on and off a few times. If need be, you can, file, sand and lube the ears on the cap.

The Fusick cap will fit better but at 3-4 times the cost of the aftermarket unit.

As funny/odd as this may sound, check the inside lip of your rear bumper for one. Last year when I was installing a vent line to my tank, I found two old gas caps resting on that lip. I had to laugh thinking of the previous owner trying to remember where the cap went when they were filling up the car. LOL

The company was no help AT All, I used the suggestion of lube/ silicone on the gasket and some elbow grease.
Bamm, I’m happy now

It fits.
