1970 Cutlass S 350

I have read that the oil filler tube has a two letter stamp on it that describes the engine, example "TL" which I think is 350 - 4. There once was a sticker on the filler tube with two letters on it but has long fallen off. Can anyone tell me where this stamp is on the tube or where I can find out in any other engine or VIN codes what these two letters are?

The stamp is the engine unit number. It is unrelated to the two letter code on the paper tag. The first digit of the engine unit number is the model year. The rest is just a sequential engine build number.

 

Bill, the Assembly Manual has a nice summary of the two-letter codes in Section 6-1, Page 80.

I inadvertently ordered oil filler tube decals from two different vendors.
One has black and white lettering with additional numbers, the other red (see below).
The assembly manual says "tape to have red letters on white background", so that should settle it.
But one of the posts above has the black and white and that decal came from folks who are really into high-end concourse restorations.
Scratching my head...

Interesting as this came up before, lets see what the experts say..I know red is what I used as it is supposed to be correct..hmmm

 

Original paper tag from a 1969 Hurst/Olds which really did not appear to be red in any fashion....
Also snippet from 1969 Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, while I know is b&w but does show the other numbers on the tag aside from just the 2 letters...

I've always printed a number of them on my computer and just replaced them as they got worn........

I'm more impressed with the Firefrost Gold nail polish.

 

I've seen two 1970 original paper tags on oil fill tubes. Both had black lettering with additional numbers and letters.

And I've seen the factory notes about red being correct. My thought is that the color may have changed from a previous year, and the manual writers didn't update those pages.

Otherwise, I'm as puzzled as the rest of you all.
