Since your vin has the correct numbers for the 442 your fine. Its been well documented that in 1968 442's were built with the trim tag located on the firewall using the Cutlass number not the 442 number. John
Common well documented subject here. Do a search(s). The hull manufacturer, Fisher Coach Works, didnt care if it was a Cutlass or a 442. So most Olds Cutlass A bodies coming from Fisher indicated 336. It was turned into a 442 at the Olds plant where it obtained its VIN tag. I say most because a few of them did get 344 Fisher tags at other plants such as Fremont. My 68 442 Fremont Z code car has 344 on the firewall and VIN tag.
What sources of publications out there discuss this?
The Fisher Body Manual for both 1968 and 1969 specifically mentions this issue on Oldsmobile A-body cars in the front section. The model and body style table in the parts book also documents this, as I've posted below. Note the footnote in the middle of the RH column.
