So my 67 Cutlass won't start theres fuel in the tank, and it'll turn for a bit if I fill the carb with gas, but there doesn't seem to be any fuel coming out from the fuel pump even though when I turn it over there's some cyclic pressure coming out of the fuel line. I had a problem starting it two weeks ago, then it ran and I drove it to my garage and let it sit for a couple weeks, now it don't want to start. The lines seem good coming from the gas tank, any ideas? I didn't run it all year so maybe something dried up.

 

It sounds like either:
a failed fuel pump
a congested line or filter (inline or in tank)
a line leaking air on the suction side

Test each independently and you will know what needs to be fixed.

You need to work your way back and see where you have fuel.

 

And when you're done, please replace that rubber hose with a hard line.

 

Yes thank you gentlemen, I will take the line off the other end of the fuel pump next, and then to infinity and beyond

 

Check the rubber hoses on the suction side of the pump. There's one that runs from the tank sending unit to the hard line on the frame rail and another from that hard line to the inlet of the pump. As these hoses deteriorate and crack, they allow the pump to suck air instead of fuel. Since they are on the suction side of the pump, you typically won't see a fuel leak or puddle.

This is an odd coincidence, I was just getting on here to ask for help with the same problem. I actually got to drive my car a little bit lately! Almost 100 miles! Then this - I started it up Friday morning, started towards work, drove about a mile and the car just quit. It sputtered just once and was trying to catch but wouldn't.

So I called my tow truck driver (who I am now on a first name basis with) and it towed home. That's no joke by the way, I didn't even have to give him my home address because he's towed me 4 times now in the 5 months I've owned the car, but I digress.

So today I put 5 gallons of gas in it to make sure that wasn't the issue, and it started right up, ran for about one minute and just quit again. Like Friday, it tried to catch a couple of times but wouldn't. Any ideas?

 

Do you have a spark when it's not working?

Did you check to see whether there is gas in the float bowl when it quits?

There are some cheap in line fuel pressure gauges you can quickly hook up just to see if the fuel pump is working. If you can eliminate fuel system you can then concentrate on electrical. Good luck.

Wow that's great! You know it was the old line from the fuel tank was broken where it bends into the metal line. I replaced wiht 3/8 fuel line and back on the road baby,
