1970 442 id numbers

Is there any olds 442 in 1970 that had vin number that started with 34477 and not 34487 or 34467. Saw a red 70 442 at mecum in Florida that started with 34477 and claimed to be a 442---thanks for ant info

344... means it is a real 442 VIN. The second and third characters designate the model line (44 = 442, 42 = Supreme, 36 = V8 Cutlass, etc). The fifth and sixth characters designate the body style (67 = convert, 77 = Sport Coupe, 87 = Holiday Coupe).

Legitimate 1970 442 VINs could start 34467..., 34477...., or 34487...

I gather that with a VIN like that, it verifies a factory post 442, yes.

as for "thanks for ant info"

Sport Coupe is Olds-speak for post copupe. Holiday means hardtop.

Proving once again why one needs to be especially wary at the big-name auctions...

That particular car was discussed here. The VIN tag has been switched.

So, for THAT car.... is it a 442? No, not really, what with the VIN having been switched to that of a car that it is not.

Who has pix of the VI N rivets on this car?
Not that one can't buy the right thing, but sometimes they don't, and Lansing cars of that era have the head of the rivet underside. Therefore ordinary pop rivet, and/or rivet head on top = more evidence of tomfoolery.

I'll add that one should probably believe the factory before Mecum or BJ...

This page is from the 1970 factory advertising brochure.

(Chris subscribes to the same philosophy that I do, namely that it's better to be a smartass than a dumb ***... )
