Where to hook up EGR

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but where should the EGR valve be hooked up to. The PO of the car had it hooked up to the distributor vacuum advance line with a T connection. Im pretty sure its not supposed to go there so I hooked it up to an open vacuum port on the back of the carb. Is that where it is supposed to go or is there another place I should be connecting it to. Btw,the engine is a 403 with an older cab, not sure if that matters.

an older carb.(i assume that's what you meant) won't have the "timed" vacuum port that the egr valve requires. if your motor runs fine(without pinging or knocking) with the timing correctly set, and the egr valve disconnected-leave it disconnected. if it pings/knocks, either back off the timing until it doesn't, or get a correct carb. that has the "timed" vacuum port for the egr.

EGR should only be open at part throttle cruise, thus the need for a properly timed vacuum port.
