That is a good question.

Are you sure your steering column is original to your car?

Gm often offered an option on one make and would soon make it available to other lines of its products.

Specific to your Olds related question, I can't answer it. Someone with a stack of Oldsmobile factory manuals can tell you for sure.

I think it went to he column on the Delta 88 and the 98 in 1977. I am not 100% sure.

I had a '76 regency and I am pretty darn sure it was still on the floor. It was a few year later that I got my foot stuck in the steering wheel trying to turn on the brights.

No idea if the column is original, it matches the rest of the interior blue, but that don't mean much..
but it is correct for a floor shifted car(or it would seem) as there is no stock/mount for a column shifter..

My '77 Supreme Brougham had it on the floor, I had a '77 Grand Prix LJ, and it was on the steering column.

The dimmer switch on the column was part of the Salon option since it came out, Pontiac Grand-Ams had it also. My girlfriends 43k original '76 Salon has the column dimmer like it should & it has a rubber plug in the carpet where the floor dimmer would have been.

OK just seemed odd, I went to flash the high beams and could not hit a switch, the next morning went looking for it , figured the maybe the switch was removed or carpet moved/etc. and no switch.. looked at column and could not make out the faded font on the small plastic piece near stock, and slowly and carefully pulled back on the stock and ding ding ding highbeams.
My 1975 I had in the early 90's it was on the floor, but it was a base car I'd guess, 260v8 and bench seat, and well that was it.

Not that it matters any more since the question has been answered, but the dimmer switch on my '78 Toro is on the floor.
