Water Pump Question

I have a 1972 cutlass "s" with a rocket 350 without AC. I recently blew my water pump and bought an AC Delco replacement. When I got it, it appeared to be a little bit taller than the one that was on the car. I put it on just to see and the belts are off about 1/4. If I started the car it would rip the belts to shreads. YearOne gives me specifications for the Non ac pump from engine block mounting to the top of the fan mounting area to be 5.57 inches. The AC one is supposed to be 5.95 inches. The one that came off the car was only 5.25 inches. What do I do?

Has anyone else had problems with this? What brand of water pumps have you guys used? I figured the AC Delco ones would be best, but it seems there is some sort of a problem. Any suggestions?

Please help.

You'll just have to order the correct water pump.
Try having the local autozone or whatever look up a 65 330 pump non ac application.
Bring in your old one and compare.

According to the 72 Olds service manual:
5.947" All with A/C
5.572" B&C body without A/C
5.072" A&E body without A/C

Someone at Year one put in the wrong numbers and sold you the wrong pump. They need to fix the error at no cost to you.
Mine has A/C and I use the Master brand new pumps. The 1yr remans last for 1yr, 1mo.

E bodies are Toronados, Eldorados and C bodies are 98's I think.

No part numbers were given in that manual, but maybe in the assy manual I have at home...
Just go down to your local parts store and tell them what you need, they still sell them. Measure it there or take your old one to verify size.
Just get a new one, not a reman.
Then send the non-fitter back to YO at their expense (request a shipment pickup) due to their error.

All the local parts stores only have the 5 5/8 pump and the 5.95 pump for the AC. I'll try asking for a chevelle pump, where it says they are the same height, and try the 330 route.

Alright, I took the casting number off of the pump, which is 404584. When he crossed it it came back to fit a
68 Delmont 350 2bbl
67 delmont 88 330
66-67 ninety eight 425 4bbl
70 toronado 19970 455 4 bbl
67 toronado 435 4 bbl
66 toronado trofeo 425 4bbl.

Its an expensie pump, its like $90. Its something I need to have special ordered and can't return if opened (how stupid). All I want to do is try to compare them and they won't let me.

Should I assume its the right pump? I find it hard to believe everyone else with a 1972 cutlass without ac has this much trouble getting a pump.

It should not be this hard; hopefully someone with the right knowledge will stumble upon this thread. I would not this this would be a rare application.
Maybe your parts guys are not wanting to help much either.
Try other stores maybe?

I looked in the old Olds parts list, ironically no entry was made for a 72 w/o A/C. Unless there is a typo on # 231886 (where 73-74 should be 71-74??)
(See picture).

According to roackauto, your correct AC delco part would be 252202 (12493951) and cost 67 bucks. HOWEVER, the online cross reference says it will fit B and E bodies also, WTF??
Returns are easy, but you have to pay all the shipping...

If you had A/C, there are pumps everywhere.
Wish i could help more...

Well I think I may have found one. Its coming out of new hampshire, its called Parts Master. It was $99 wholesale(a close family friend has a auto repair shop). This seems quite expensive, but I had to bite the bullet and suck it up. I'll let you guys know.

Should be here tomorow by 10:00am.

Rob, notice how the 252-202 isn't in stock anymore? Thats because I already bought that pump and its currently on my car. So there is an error somewhere in the system and its filtered out to the aftermarket world, according to the guy a GMB.

All the non-A/C pumps are high cost as they are more uncommon and less demand.

I thought you got your pump from Year one, but guess you just looked at the specs (which were wrong)

Hopefully it will be right. If not, they should take it back since it was unused and would not fit it's intended application.
