sticky black residue

sticky black residue

i'm finding black sticky residue on belts and lining of hood after driving. Any thoughts? power steering pump? 1968 cutlass with 350..

Could be a belt slipping enough to melt the rubber.

Does your car have A/C? A6 compressors are designed to leak a tiny about of refrigerant, the theory is the refrigerant will also carry a little oil with it to keep the front seal lubricated. Obviously, this was long before anyone knew about the ozone laye! . Unfortunately the compressor pulley flings the oil under the hood, you will see the residue in a perfect line on the hood insulation.

Buicks had a sheetmetal gauge around the pulley to catch the mess.

ac is not hooked up... I've been advised perhaps slipping belt, thanks for the reply good sir..

If the belts are suspect make sure you check the bearings in your alternator and power steering pump.
