Hey guys, so I have two columns here the one on the right is a 68 442 auto on floor. The right is a 72 tilt but the linkage bracket is much different. Could this be for a 4 spd? Also the 69 column has a spring at.the bracket the 72 does not. Is it missing? Are the brackets welded or can the be swapped?
Thanks 70 post,So I guess I will need The linkage for the tilt column (left one.) As the linkage from the column on right will be to small I'm guessing.
Your "1972" tilt column looks like a 73-77 column. All 1969-newer GMs had a backdrive linkage from the trans to the column. This was to lock the shifter with the key, per federal law. Yes, even floor shift cars had this.
Did the bracket connect to anything on the 4 speed or was it fixed in place?
Joe answered the question.....yes, the 4 spd column uses the "back drive" parts like an auto column does.....again, the columns are THE SAME THING. There is no separate "4 speed" column....at least for the years we are discussing.

What are you seeing on the tilt column, for my education? That looks like a '72 to me.

The 69-72 and 73-77 columns are nearly identical except for that lever for the backdrive linkage. The 73-77 columns use the straight lever, the earlier ones use the curved lever.
