I have an oldsmobile 88 dynamic super Holliday 1963 394 V8, and I'm looking for car parts for this car especially a starter pinion. Would you know where I could it ?
Thank you very much
Véro
It's called a starter drive assembly. The original GM part number is 1932188. If you search for 1932188 starter drive you will find that this part was used on all 1957-1963 Olds full size cars, in addition to Cadillacs from that period and other makes and models. RockAuto does not list it under 1963 Olds, but if you search by part number for 1932188 on their website, you'll find that Standard Motor Products P/N SDN2 is the replacement and sells for about $28.
Be aware that the biggest issue in replacing the starter drive is getting the retaining ring off the end of the armature shaft. Pull off the stop washer (item 15), then you have to push the retainer collar (13) back off of the snap ring (14). This is retained by the spring force in the snap ring, so it takes a little effort. Once done, remove the snap ring and chase it across the garage. When reassembling, be sure to put the retainer collar back over the armature shaft BEFORE replacing the snap ring (ask me how I know...). I usually use two pliers to snap the collar back over the snap ring. Also don't forget the stop washer.
