Speedometer Cable
Speedometer Cable
I want to lube my speedo cable. Looking for opinions on the best way to lube.
Pull cable out of housing? Is it hard to get back into the housing?
Pour lube in one end and gravity feed?
What is the ideal lube to use?

Hey!
I recently installed a used replacement cable into my 64 Olds, so I did a bit of research into this.
-Unscrew the cable at the speedometer end behind the dash
-pull the inside cable out of the tube
-I would unscrew the other end as well
-with a rag wrapped round the lower end, spray brake cleaner through the tube until it flows clean
-saturate a second rag with brake cleaner and gently clean off the interior cable by pulling it through the folded rag. Pay attention for any crusty sections of old, dried out lube or stray cable wires
-using WHITE LITHIUM GREASE spray the cable and smooth on with your fingers
-carefully re-insert the cable into the tube and spin with your fingers to spread the grease around
Pending that the cable and tube are cable are now clean and lubricated, there should be minimal resistance
