Reassembly of '68 intermediate Steering Shaft

I neglected to photograph the dis-assembly of my intermediate steering shaft in the spring when I was prepping for cleaning, refinishing, and re-install. Now, when I'm assembling it this weekend, I find I have an extra circular spring clip that is not shown in the Parts Manual, the CSM, nor the Assembly manual.

The un-flexed spring clip is a hair smaller ID than the OD of the nickle/chrome plated collar that goes around the top of the shaft. Does this clip perhaps anchor the (new) rubber boot to the shaft, inside the housing?

The picture of the diagram is from page 9A-35 in the 1968 CSM. It does not show the spring clip. The other photos show the parts I have on hand which were within the zip lock baggie of small parts from the dis-assembly.

TIA.

Yes, that clip anchors the seal on the inside of the housing and stops grease from seeping out. put the seal + clip on before the small cross shaft. Different size shaft here, but same idea.......... http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/...placement.html

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks, MrOlds. You have confirmed my suspicion; your info plus those pictures at the link you provide are exactly what I was imagining.

Guess what, I'm going to photograph the re-assembly process - for all the good it does me now At least I'll have the parts and process photographed for my rebuild documentation. Maybe I'll post them here at C.O. when I'm done with the overall project.

Thanks again!

Glad to help! There are many good pics + articles here on CO. We had one Buick guy who years ago documented a lot of different repair tasks. Many apply to all GM A body.
