Just wondering if anyone has used the Flaming River rack and pinion system and if so, will it clear long-tube headers on a big block.

On what kind of car? If you are talking about an A-body, the steering is in front of the crossmember and should have no clearance issues with headers.

its on a 70' 442.

i would hope it wouldnt was just thinking about the steering shaft.

Ah. Naturally that depends on where the input shaft is for the rack vs. on the stock box. I suspect you'll need to fabricate a shaft, at which point, just put the U-joints (and if needed, a support bearing) where ever they need to be.
