Mystery bracket on 12 bolt rearends?

Went to look at some el Camino parts, they seller had a couple 12 bolt rearends with this bracket on them. One rearend was out of a Camaro, the others 68-72 Chevelles. All 3 had this bracket. I don’t recall the 12 bolt in my car ever having it, and I don’t remember ever seeing one on other cars.

What’s it for? Is it only a 12 bolt thing? Just curious.

I have seen those before on 12 bolt Chevy rears. I don't know what the purpose was either, looks like a splash shield. I had heard only El Caminos & maybe wagons had them.

Don't those cover the shocks? Can't tell by the photo, but had a Elco, and had air shocks, and protrected them, probably the lines.

It is a rock shield for the air shocks.

I don't know if it's a fender or a crash beam
