Muffler Recommendations

Hi guys,

Thanks for the info in advance! I have a 455 bored 60 over w
and dynoec at 500 horsepower at 5000 RPM and 580
ft lb of torque at 3500. Pump gas 11:1
compression. what type of mufflers would you recommend to give me the most horsepower and that classic muscle car throaty, lopey sound? I plan on 3 inchers.

Exhaust sound is a very personal experience, what one person likes another hates. I'm at that age where I like a more subdued note with no drone, I use Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers.

When I bought my Hurst Olds with a stock 455 in it last year, it was a little too loud for me at 76 years old. So , I put a set of Dynomax Super Turbos on it which are my favorite muffler. I also added an H pipe and it was just like I like it. My wife complained that the car had a little exhaust smell (the catalytic converter has been removed and it has true duals) so I put a pair of high-flow cats on it and it quietened it down even more to the point of being tool quiet. It sounds like a new factory muscle car. You might want to look at Magnaflow or one of the other Dynamax mufflers if you are looking for something louder. I would stay away from Flowmaster.

X2 on the DynoMax Turbo mufflers; they have a nice rumble without the drone.

The 1st car I owned was a 1967 4-4-2 (purchased summer 1969). The very 1st modification I installed Glasspack mufflers. The 2nd 4-4-2 I owned was a 1972 (purchased summer 1976). I installed Glasspack mufflers on the '72, as well. IMO, Glasspacks provide the best throaty exhaust system on American muscle-car-era vehicles.

For an iconic muscle car sound you'll want glasspacks. I have 45" Thrush glasspacks on my 71 98 with an X pipe. While it might be a bit aggressive for a 98 or Delta 88, the sound would fit perfectly for any A/G body Cutlass.

Also, before you buy mufflers or glasspacks online I suggest you shop at your local exhaust shop. They sometimes have store brand mufflers that can save you money.

Just having 3" pipes will give you much more exhaust sound level. You may want to consider Super Turbos instead of glasspacks on your system if you want to keep the overall sound level under more control.

You could always try a set of these. They are packed with stainless steel. These things are built from heavy metal and would never burn out.

The Walker 21468 diesel muffler is zero restriction with some sound attenuation.

I like Spintech mufflers. High quality construction with no drone. They have a very deep tone as well.

I have the Pypes 3 inch exhaust with the Race Pro mufflers. During long cruises or drives it gets a little annoying with a drone sound but short cruise ins and car shows it is nice with the 3 inch exhaust and a 455 it sounds great it's just the long drives with the constant drone that gets annoying. I would recommend Hooker aerochamber mufflers, I used these on a G body cutlass with a 455 and the sound was was a lower tone with little to no drone on long drives.

DynoMax Super Turbo Mufflers. Would they be good for a 1994 Cutlass Supreme 3.4 with the fake duals?

My exhaust is original and is on borrowed time and I need to think about replacements. Soon. I also need to get shorter mufflers so the intermediate pipe can protrude/split further back so I can accommodate the installation of an ADDCO sway bar I plan on having put in to replace the dental floss sway bar that's in it now.
