1968 was the first year that the 442 became it's own model with a specific vin. They all start with "344". Lansing built cars still used cutlass "336" trim tags on the cowl top, under the hood but the vin on the dash has to be "344" The '68 & '69 400s are "G" blocks. On the block between the oil fill tube & oil pressure sender is a block casting # which should be 396026 & right next to it is a large letter G, If it's an "F" it's a 455 & not correct for a 442( Unless it's an H/O). The heads will have a letter "C" on each end ("D" for a W30) There is a small pad on the block right below the front of the driver side head that will have the cars' partial vin stamped on it.

Also, do not be surprised if the car has a 344678... VIN and a 33667 cowl tag. This was normal for the 1968-69 cars.
An FYI, however. Some of the most expensive cars I've ever bought were "cheap cars in pieces".
Another FYI, that experience has never stopped me from doing it again, either.
