hood spring question
hood spring question
Just installed a fiberglass 70 OAI hood on my 69 wagon. Bought a pair of aftermarket springs that are supposed to support the hood. They do not. Almost lost my head, but luclily was able to grab the hood before it crashed onto the locks.
My questions are, does a stock steel hood take the same hood springs as OEM 70 OAI hood?
This hood has a full fiberglass frame and air box. It weighs 45# only. Do you think stock springs would work?
Does anyone have sources for diffrent spring rate hood springs?
Thanks!

The factory OAI hood uses the same spring and hinge as the steel hood according to the Olds parts catalog?
The Parts Place '70 hood with the steel frame uses the stock hinges and springs.
Tht hood is just too light for stock and too heavy for the aftermarket lightweight springs it seems?
Maybe some worn out stick springs would do it?
Not sure if heat would take some tension out like some do to car springs for lowering or if it could create more problems.
I just went round and round with the hood springs for my 69 H/O. The standards spring should have 19 turns in it. After changing out springs 4 times, I finally bent the ears on the hindge that hold the springs out just the tinyest bit and they now hold the H/O hood with the heavy fiberglass scoops.
Bought these springs from a guy on ebay. Guess I got what I paid for huh?
It seems one of the hood hinges goes up further than the other, but when closed they both are closing evenly. The right side will open to the lock but the left one isnt all the way to the lock. When I push the hood all the way up and both hinges are fully open, the hood says up just fine. Pull it down just a little on the one side and it wants to slam shut. Bad hinge or just not adjusted correctly? I remember that with the stock hood and springs, the hood didnt want to stay open too good either. When I pulled the hood down more than 6" it would want to slam shut. Maybe both hinges bad?

I thought the hinges were the same but the springs were different, this is one of those items that seems to have three answers all the time.
