Question Failed convertible top switch

So while at the GM Nationals in Carlilse I put the top down Friday morning and up Saturday night. Saturday morning I went to put the top back down for the show and nothing ! I don't even think I could here the humming of the motor. Before I dive into the dash in 102 heat index. Is it possible the fuse went bad? does anyone know what fuse the convertible top would be linked to? Possibly the back up lights? I think when I went to back it into its spot I don't believe I saw the back up light reflection . And being LED's I'm sure I would have seen them.

1972 Cutlass Supreme but late 1971 assembly line car. Power windows A/C and convertible top.

There is a relay for the top. Post what model / year vehicle you are working on and someone will be able to tell you where the relay is mounted.

edit:
sorry, I meant circuit breaker and not relay. Thanks for catching that matt.

Pretty sure convertible top motors are on a circuit breaker. There is also a relay that prevents the pump from running unless the ignition is on.

Visually check the fuses. If you don’t see anything obvious, get a cheap test light. Test each fuse with the test light, with the ignition on you should have power on both sides of each fuse.

This is the fuse box illustration from my 69 manual. It says the reverse lamp fuse powers the cruise control, rear window on station wagons, abd the power window relay. Although it doesn’t mention convertible top, I wouldn’t be surprised if the top isn’t on that circuit also n

My '72 has a circuit breaker relay (metal with 'L' shaped contacts which fit into the fuse box slots - I use a 40amp rated breaker because I found the 30amp overloads too easily and trips, causing a delay in resuming top operation until the breaker resets itself

if it's the switch itself which went bad, it's a bastard and a half to replace from behind a full assembled dash...

Once you have 12VDC back at the motor, clean the grounds in the top wire harness all the way back to the motor.

70sgeek,
Oh I know, have replaced it more then once since I had it from my Dad ! He was smart ! When the switch went on him he put a toggle switch in under the dash ! I'm really starting to think of going back to it ! LOL

Hi Matt,
Yeah that is why I posed the question. Tomorrow afternoon when there isn't a heat index of 103 ! I will have my Wife come out and check the reverse lights since the car is not garaged. Oh and also mine does not have a circuit breaker, but does have a relay. But I can put my top up and down without the ignition on. Car is a 72 Cutlass Supreme but a 71 assembly date so things are a little wonky from component switch ups !
