evaporator box insulation?

On the evaporator box there is a "goo/tar " substance to insulate the connection. At least that's what I think it is. What is the name of this substance and where do you purchase it.

You most likely might find it under various names and different configurations/packaging - it's automotive AC insulation. This is the stuff I use - FACTORY AIR 59010

I used 3M strip caulk to seal the evap box to the firewall. One box has 60 1 foot strips, more then enough and it’s easy to work with.

That strip caulk lasts forever. I have a box that I bought 50 years ago and I still to this day am using it! It does not appear to have dried up at all and seems to be just as pliable as it was 50 years ago.

67OAI, you're not kidding about the strip caulk lasting forever!. I got a box of the black strips(they had gray also) back in '79 to use on my first '68 442 resto & I've used for all kinds of sealing needs over the years. It's still just as pliable now as it was when new! I'm down to my last sheet though!!

Which seal?
The seal along the edges of the case is strip caulk. Note: store it inside. I left mine in the garage and it gooped up into a useless wad.

The seal where the evap goes into/outof the box is called cork tape.

The correct stuff can be bought at an air conditioning supply house like Johnstone. It’s not strip caulk. It’s sold in a roll. Year One used to sell it.

That's cork tape, which is commonly sold at parts stores, and used where the evaporator tubes enter and exist the housing.

Strip caulk is something completely different and is used where the housing seals to the firewall and the two housing halves seal to each other. Strip caulk is the correct stuff. In a pinch you can get the stuff at the home improvement stores and use that, but the real 3M stuff is much tackier and easier to work with.
