ECM function

ECM function

anybody know what the ECM actually does in an 86 Cutlass? I'm gonna guess it can be made to disappear.......thanx

It controls quite a few things, actually. It controls the fuel enrichment if you have a CCC and the ignition advance. If I remember right, it also controls torque converter lockup and the A/C system. Probably a couple other things as well. Beyond this, I don't really know since I'm not really into computer controlled engines anyway. Hope this helps.

The 86 has the CCC system that contols fuel delivery to the engine.
To remove the ECM, you must install a non-CCC HEI disty and carb. Also, AC relay needs to be hotwired and a TC clutch lockup switch devised.
I assume you are in a non-emissions-check state.

thanx for all replies. I'm guessing since a 403 was put in with a Holley 750 that the ECM has been disabled. I didn't know if it controlled much else than engine.

If you've already taken the engine off the computer, it isn't controlling anything now. The ECM requires the TPS and RPM signals from the carb and distributor to function. As noted above, the non-engine related functions are the A/C compressor clutch and the torque converter lockup.

maybe that's why I don't feel the lockup...
