I’m doing a power window conversion and while everything is out, hey, how about the door latches too? The wire or spring that wraps around the top of the latch...should it be wound tight? Mine is in the attached pic. Notice how that wire looks kinda unraveled? Normal?
If it was working before, why do you think there's something wrong with it? No, it isn't supposed to be wound tightly. If it were, it wouldn't have been possible to fit over the head on that post. Note that the ID of the spring is sized to allow it to fit easily over the head. Once in place, the spring force holds it to the side like that, and it then can't pop off past the head.
Joe is always there when you need him. I guess I was trying to account for that little bit of play or slack in the door button. Drivers side has it, passenger doesn’t.

That's called manufacturing tolerance. The location of that paddle that the push button presses against is governed by a hard stop in the mechanism, not the spring. Minor variations in the shape of the outer door panel, the length of the stud on the back of the pushbutton, and the position of the latch mechanism in the door all contribute to slop (or lack thereof).
Thanks Joe,
ive been all over the internet today looking for one. Really didn’t want to spend the money on a new latch. Just ordered it. Appreciate the knowledge you share with us.
