I don't believe so. I know my original '70 442 does not have one (flange is pressed on), but my '70 SS Chevelle does (flange is bolted on).

This will take some digging into. Are you sure that the Chevy application was a "big block" application? Offhand, I can't imagine any reason for that to be engine related.
Not (yet) sure of '68-'72 Olds applications, but the column use in '65-'67 was not dependent on what engine was used. Parts books will give some answers, and GM interchange will too.

Kurt, it is a Chevrolet thing, used on big block equipted Monte Carlo and Chevelle for assembly and service purposes. Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac did not use this style according to Jim Shea a long time engineer at Saginaw.

70-72 A body Buicks(GS455 and Sport Wagons) equipped with 455s also had the 2 piece steering shaft.

With the use of the wider big block engines in the A body Buick and Chevrolets the one piece steering shaft could not get past the LH exhaust manifold for installation.

Thanks Henry, there's the reason for it! So I now wonder what are the differences that Pontiac and Olds didn't need it?

Interesting to note how the engine compartments were starting to fill up!
