Cruise Control

My 71 Cutlass Supreme is driven very, very infrequently and the cruise control used even less. I find that it no longer holds at a steady speed bur rather accelerates, to what speed I do not know because I cancel it at about 85. The previous owner of the car said he never had this problem, or any problem with this unit. Any ideas?

I had the same problem with my '69 4-4-2 using a '70-'82 2-wire transducer and the problem was in the transducer. Something had obstructed the vacuum flow into/out of the adjustable fitting that is located close to where the two wires (hold/black wire and engage/purple wire) plug into the unit. Bottom line - I sent my transducer in to be rebuilt. Cost was about $130 but it worked fine when I got it back.

You are right - I seldom use mine, more so just to make sure that it works!

I would think a vacuum hose or a diaphragm in the unit itself cracked.

Thanks. That's not in my budget right now and I hope I stumble on some other solution, but just in case who did your rebuild?

My rebuild was done by a man named Richard Thayer. His business is called Cruise Masters, 6066 Shingle Creek Pkwy, Minneapolis MN 55430, phone 763-585-4547. Not only did he rebuild the 70-82 transducer I was using, he also repaired my original '69-year-only transducer.

I don't think the problem would be a bad diaphragm or vacuum hose because with constant increasing speed that would tell me the vacuum is holding and getting stronger, which takes me back to the transducer. I'm no expert on this, though...just throwing that out there as a thought.
