Cruise Control

The cruise control in my '71 Cutlass does not hold at a steady speed. Rather, it accelerates fairly rapidly to a speed that is higher than I want to go. Any ideas on a fix?

The 1971 Chassis Service Manual has a whole section on how to service and adjust the cruise control. There are multiple possible causes.
