Convertible Top Differences 68-72 Cutlass

I have a convertible top that I'm selling parts off of. It came off a 71 Cutlass convertible. Another member is interested in the rear trim stick. Not sure the exact year of his car but, we swapped pics and they are different. A correct re-pop (parts match his) is available from various convertible parts sources but each source states that the replacement part is for 69-72.

Is 68 a one year only top? Were there two different designs between 68-72? Everything shown on Ebay is listed for 68-72.

Mine has an extra connecting link that is riveted to the trim stick with similar rivets that hold hood hinges together.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not able to access my Photobucket account to post pics right now, will post them this afternoon.

Thanks,
Nick

I did get ahold of my buddy with the older parts book and we only came up with ONE part number for 1968-1972. 8746482 is the part number. The group number is 12.946.

I hope someone can dig a little deeper into thier archives and find some reasoning for the difference.

And I hope to God we are talking about the same peice.. LOL

John

I believe there are differences, but I'm not positive what they are.

The only thing I could find is there could be a one piece and a three piece trim stick. Mine is a one piece on an automatic top.

If by "trim stick" you mean "tack stick" you are correct. I have a later top on my 68 and I used the original 3 piece tack strip

Here's a pic of the one piece that came with the top. I was told it was out of a 70-72 Buick. (it's for sale if someone needs it):

Mike,

Can you elaborate on the 3 piece? Is it the long piece that the tack strip is attached to and two links on each side?

Thanks,
Nick

It's my understanding that the trim stick is the same for 69-72 and the 68 is a different beast. Not sure what made 68 unique.

This is what mine looks like. Tamraz has this on Ebay right now and it says 68-72.

Does 69-72 have the extra link?

That's exactly what they are. The long piece and the two curved end pieces are constructed the same way. They each have papery tack material inside. I removed the inside paper type material and riveted plastic tack strip in it's place. I don't think I have any pictures of the three piece

I think we're talking about two different things. The Tamraz pic above does not have the rear tack strip in it

Isn't the 68 a fixed 3 piece attached to the body inside the well versus attached to the top frame? and the 69-72 is (one piece) attached to the top frame and it floats? And therefore the whole 68 top frame assembly is different than 69-72 top frame assembly Not sure but I thought it was something to that effect.

Well, low and behold I figured it out.

When I bought the car it was already disassembled. Long story short I found the rear trim stick. It looks like there are two tack strips? One attached to the top and one to the body?

No, I mean trim stick as it is in the Olds factory parts manuals. Tack strip is the aftermarket nomenclature. tomAto- tomahto

Yours looks like the part I require. How much?

I looked it up in the Fisher Body Manual. You are correct, "trim stick" it is.

I sent you a PM on the part
