Conv top switch

I was chatting with a buddy yesterday who was having issues with his top on his 71 Supreme. It went up but now it won't go down. He was trying to access the switch through the gas guage, but can't get the harness connector off. Are there any hidden latches to release or are they just a very tight fit and need to be pried from all sides? I'm thinking he will have better access from under the dash after removing the A/C duct. Thanks for any help.

Brian, I've got a 1971 wagon and the tail gate power window is the same switch as the convert. I would go from under the dash, and yes he'll likely need to remove some AC duct work. I just tried to get a photo of the backside of mine but couldn't get a good angle to work. Using a mirror and flashlight it looks like there may be two 1/4" head screws that hold the plug on. Is there a diagram in the Chassis Service Manual? John

I think the connector has to be removed before the white plastic retainer can be unscrewed (wires too close to screw head). You can try it, but pull the battery cable first.
All I know is that it takes a good deal of patience to get it off.

Also in that thread is how to take apart the cruise and top switches for contact repair.
