What are the correct finishes for 68-72 A body front and rear drum brake backing plates?

Crappy bucket-dipped semi-gloss black, if I'm not mistaken.

From the factory they are natural cast or stamped in this case with a oil mist applied.

I defer to H.O. on this.

Were any done with the zinc chromate, or is that a common restoration error?

I am of the opinion that, even though it is incorrect, I prefer my chassis parts 100% painted and rust protected.

I agree, which is why I painted mine with the same semi-gloss black paint I used for the rearend housing.

I guess they could be zinc plated without the chromate to keep them looking sorta correct.
