Body Mount Confusion
Body Mount Confusion
Hello All,
During the body removal of the '69 W30 we are doing, I noticed that there were 4 body mounts that had no bolts through them into the body as opposed to the 2 that the diagram that came with the "correct" body mount kit shows. The second two from the front (left and right sides) on the diagram have bolts and recessed washers. My car had solid rubber mounts there even though there are cage nuts on the body. One of the cage nuts has a small amount of a bolt broken off in it! Could this have been a factory screw up? Maybe on Friday or Monday a guy used the wrong bolt and broke it off then replacing it with a solid rubber cushion?? These things happened and the cars kept moving right? Any totally correct diagram or explanation would help.

Not sure the answer but my 70 W-30 only had 6 bolts holding the body on also. (4 at the back and 2 at the front) All the others were solid bushings. It is strange that a bolt was broken off. Are you sure someone else didn't have it apart over the years? I have not looked at the assembly manual that hard yet but I think I read than some 442 had solid mounts there instead of bolted ones. I am not sure why or where I read it.
I also bought a set of the new improved correct body mount kit and noted that there are bolt type mounts for the position ahead of the rear wheels, even though only the solid type came from the factory. In their instruction sheet, they mention W30s and convertibles etc. got the bolt type of mount. I reviewed my assembly manual for 71 and it clearly states only station wagons got that type of mount in that position, everything else got the solid type. Having said that, I don't know why GM had made provisions for a bolt type in that position and then never used it. Perhaps other divisions made use of it. I will probably use the bolt type of mount since it has been provided.
The compression body mount under the front door at the crossmember is a different type of mount with a recessed metal collar. The kit correctly has this, but they provide the same rebound mount as in all the other bolt type of mounts, which is incorrect in my opinion. The opening of the rebound mount should be smaller to fit tightly into that corresponding compression mount. However, perhaps it won't make any difference once tightened.
Once again though, reproduction parts are not always correct.
Are you saying your's has a solid mount in this position?
I have no explanation for your broken bolt, that is certainly unusual.
