70 cutlass carpet underlayment

Redoing carpet on my 70 sx conv. It is the tar paper looking stuff. One side is bare/dull. Other side is shiny and has a thin piece of Saran wrap looking plastic on it. Any idea which side goes up.?

Where did you get this stuff? It sounds like the shiny side goes down after you remove the plastic backing. Then the heat will melt it to the metal. Sounds like a roofing product to me...

I can't remember but I think the Parts Place. I seem to remember having trouble finding it at my normal place, Fusick and this was for a Chevelle which should be identical. The plastic does not really peel off - it is probably a vapor barrier - looks like roof ice shield or something. However, it is all precut to fit the floor exactly with cutouts for seat belt holes and brackets., so it does look decent.

I have the same underlayment on my 70 Cutlass that i did my whole interior this past summer. The saran wrap goes to the bottom because i dont know if yours has it but mine has the cut out for the high beam switch. I bought my underlayment from an classic car distributor in Long Island, NY.

Glad you got it figured out - and did NOT peel the backing off!

The underlayment I had got from Legendary was dull on both sides.

I got mine on Ebay, same on both sides. This material was less tar like, and kind of more rubbery. Didn't really mold to the floor shape until it was glued down. It's sure better than what was there before, though. Chumley
