70 442 wheel paint
70 442 wheel paint
Purchased some 73 SSll 15 in wheels with bolt on caps and would like to paint argent silver to match the factory look of 1970 wheel color. Anyone recommend the correct finish. Should i powder coat ?

re: Argent grey of a Super Stock II wheel 1970
I took this picture of a untouched original spare tire and wheel at Alliance, OH about 3 years ago.
The second picture is a restored one on a 68 442. I just wanted to point out how close people get to duplicating the original argent grey- but somehow, the shade of this color just isn't perfect to what I see to my naked eye (ie like the spare tire white wall picture below)
The argent grey almost has a the semi-gloss / satin sheen to it. I do not know what brands of paint that can be used to duplicate the pewter hue to the agrent grey color.
My untouched wheels of my 71 W-30 were identical to the rim/tire you see in the trunk spare I'm posting for you. Absolutely a perfect match to my original SS II's that are still on that car. The point I'm trying to make is the argent grey for 1970-1971- 1972 was duller than most of the restored cars argent grey's I typically see.....the spare tire photo really captures well the hue I speak of in the dull shades I recall distinctly on my 71 car.

restored cars argent grey on a 68/69 which should have looked identical too the argent grey wheel in the trunk picture above.... people get close- but they are either too or dark grey/ gray (sp?) or way to much gloss shine.

I should have taken my 71 W-30 off that Ugly *** trailer when I took those pictures next to the Olds Admin Center back in the day.
Alls I distinctly remember is the argent grey on the SS II"s on my 71 W-30 were exact (in hue/color/texture) to the picture I posted of the spare tire SSII above in the trunk of someones car in Alliance 3 years ago. And they were never touched up -no how- no way- & they were absolutely identical to that spare tire photo I posted above.
NO clear coat finish but a satin /semi/gloss hue to them didn't they use laquer based paints on everything including the wheel?
Is the term water based paint accurate in terms of the laquer finishes that somehow we can't get any more due to the epa or something?

Ah, so your the Ben that was referenced in the old thread! My 1970 spare looks darker than yours of the 1971, although your picture looks like it was bright sunlight and mine was taken on an overcast day. I've several 1968 rims that I believe are original paint, but they are all much lighter. I still wonder if the formula changed over time.
