I am going to be replacing the beat up oil pan on my L69, and am curious if there is any advantage to putting a 5 qt. pan on it instead of the stock 4 qt. size? The cost is fairly close so it is not the main issue in this case, just wondering about the positives if any?

 

It holds more oil. I put a deep Milodon pan on my 455 and I'm happy with it. I also put a stock deep pan on my TH 400 when I had it rebuilt.

 

Yeah, like Jon Lovitz would say, "then that would be more". Is it as simple as that? Holds more oil?

 

If the cost is nearly the same then I would go with the pan that has more capacity. That is just my $.02 though.

 

You dont run as much risk of "emptying the contents of the pan" all up top of the engine and starving the bearings with the xtra capacity pan.
400s are notorious for doing this - especially with a bone-stock oiling system - or even worse -- if someone put a high-volume pump in a motor with a standard oiling system. A sure ticket to spun bearings. Go with the larger pan. Lots of people use the TORONADO pan -- good bit cheaper than going with a Milodon or Moroso pan. Now thats my .02 worth -- AND -- "I've been there - done that!!! It aint funny when it happens!!

 

I probably should have gone with a Toro pan. The Milodon pan I got was over $250. Plus, I went through two leaking Moroso pans before going to the Milodon one.

 

FWIW, The cheapo Summit pan I have holds 5qts +1 in the filter.
I think it was $60.
