55 Olds oil filter base.

I'm cleaning up the engine in my 55 Olds preparing it for a rebuild. I took the oil filter base off to disassemble and clean. While unscrewing the cap over the ball and spring (I'm hoping that's an anti-drain back valve) the spring got all twisted up because of the sludge inside the housing. Now I can't seem to get it untwisted. Google hasn't helped me find a new spring. Does anybody have a clue where one might be found? Also, is the ball valve just a pressure relief valve, or is it an anti-drain valve?

If you can't find a spring a alternative is to use a spin off adapter which can be found/ bought From Ross Racing, Fusick , E bay or off any 394 or late 371. It's a bolt on easy fix.... Tedd

Thanks!! I've found a few bases on ebay, etc. and will get one of them if I can't unravel my spring. Got most of the kinks out yesterday, but had to stop when my eyes got crossed from trying to follow the loops! Doncha just love a challenge?

Well, the best price I've found is $50 plus $15 shipping. That's a lot to pay just to get a spring. It sure would be great if there were some sort of info on this part on the internet, but so far I haven't found anything. Do you know if this is a pressure relief valve, or an anti drain back valve? I've noticed some main knock if the engine started before the pump built up pressure.

I might have the part and can let you have it for much less than that. This is the piece that bolts onto the block, that the canister filter fits into, correct?

Sorry, I'm not real familiar with your vintage of Olds. But is the spring you need inside this piece? If so, I'd take $15 plus shipping for it. Or... do you want me to take the big plug next to the brass fitting off and see if the spring is good (if that's where its at?) and if so just ship you the spring? John

P.S. I've dismantled a 303 and 324 in the past and am pretty sure this came off of one of those engines.

I forgot to mention, don't try to dismantle it. I'll soak it in WD-49 to loosen up the crud inside. The crud is what ruined my spring.

Hey folks, got my filter base yesterday and it's just what I needed. Dismantled it without the spring twisting up and now I'm ready to put it all back together. Now THIS is the way folks help other folks!
