455 Thermostat

I found this thermostat in the 455 I'm building when I took it apart, But I cant say as I've ever seen one like this before, It looks like an interesting design. Were these any good? Why did they stop making them like this? It is brand new so I'm wondering if i should just reuse it cause it looks pretty well built.

That is an OEM t-stat. Far better quality than anything you can get today. Be sure to pay attention to the "front" marking when installing it.

I figured it must be the original, I guess i will use it, Just wonder why they stopped making that design, were there problems with them?

The OEM Thermostats were manufactured by Dole. I do not believe that they were problematic in any way. And.....when the thermostat "door" is fully open you have slightly better water flow as well. I still run the original one in my 1972 Cutlass. It works perfect.

Informative historical read RE: Dole Valve Company
Founded 1923 by Andrew Dole (Morton Grove, IL) - purchased by Eaton Corporation (1963). Dole Valve Company most likely consumed via several mergers & acquisitions over the years.

Kewl info. I had heard of Dole Valve (more for heater control valves) but didn't know the story. Thanks.
