1968 keys

1968 keys

Key question. I believe there should be two keys for a car. One for trunk and one for door locks and ignition? I have three. One ignition, one for doors, and one for trunk. I know the one on the right in the picture is a 69 and up key. I fixed this by getting correct 68 earlier key as is on the left in the picture. Mine is a 68 442 holiday coup. Thanks matt

The ignition switch may have been changed over the years.

So what's the problem? From L to R: ignition key, trunk/glovebox/console key, and ignition key for a '69.

No problem as you forgot to mention door keys. Which is the left one.
L to R which fits my car now
doors
trunk etc
ignition
i got the 69 key cut on a 68 key but should I originally have three or two keys?

the key code on the far left key looks like 8060 if so that's the code used on 1935 to 1966 keys for the doors and ignition.

I'm not certain about 1968, but my car has one key for doors and ignition and another for glove box, console, and trunk. Sounds as if some locks (or ignition?) were replaced and not re-keyed to match the others.

Since you did not state one for the glove box....is one of those for the glove box alone since it may have been changed separately from the other locks, or the same for the trunk and/or doors? At least one lock was changed (apparently).

Yes the rectangle one one the right is ignition wrong style key the middle one fits the trunk and the left one the doors. No lock on console and not sure of glove box but as was mentioned I think the issue is with the left one as the code mentioned is 66 and earlier possibly so that would mean the door locks have been fooled with I would guess.
I guess my goal is two sets of two correct coded and shaped keys. 😁

no one fits ign one trunk and one doors never noticed a glove box lock.😳

Nicks1966 is correct. The left key in the photo is a 1966-earlier blank. Those locks have been replaced. The 1966-older keys and locks used only four different tumblers and thus have a much smaller number of potential key codes. The other thing that people don't realize is that while the 1935-66 cars often (but not always) used one octagon and one round key, the blade part of those blanks is the same. The only difference is the shape of the head.

Starting with 1967, GM used different blanks designated by letters. There were four sets of blanks that repeated. A/B blanks were used in 1967, 71, 75, etc. C/D blanks were used in 68, 72, 76. E/F blanks were used in 69, 73, 77. J/K blanks were used in 70, 74, 78. The letter designated the configuration of the grooves in the sides of the blade, and a 1968 C blank with octagonal head will interchange with a 1972 C blank with a rectangular head.

The round D key in the center of the photo is correct for a 1968 trunk/glove box/console key The matching ignition/door key will be a C blank. What is the letter on the right hand key in the photo? If it's a C, you can have it cut onto an octagonal C blank and that would be correct. If the octagonal key on the left in the photo fits your ignition, someone has replaced the lock cylinder. Note that the 66-older blank can be inserted into a lock cylinder for an "A" blank, so it's possible that you have a 1967 lock cylinder in the ignition, or you may have a 1966 cylinder. The aftermarket replacement locks and keys do not correctly match the original GM usage, and some of the lower-price aftermarket cylinders will accept any GM key blank, which makes it much less secure. If you want the ignition to match the door, you will need to find a correct 1968 ignition lock cylinder and have it coded to match your door key.

My '68 4-4-2 is the same key configuration. Either your door or ignition key has been replaced. Does your "door" key open both doors?
