1968 442 or H/O heater hose routing and clamp

One of those "splitting hairs" type of questions/discussion. The engine compartment on my car was a basket case, and I've been assembling a mock up engine to make sure I have all the detail parts correct.

If you wrap the heater hose around the outside/passenger side of the engine oil fill tube, it seems like it wants to interfere with the OAI heat riser adapter on the air cleaner.

I was doing some research, and it appears that the hose was supposed to wrap around the center side/driver's side of the oil fill tube, per my references below.

Picture 1: '68 PIM picture... I have no other details in my copy other than this image.
Picture 2: Picture from the '68 CSM, guessing it's a big car engine compartment, as it's labeled as a 455.
Picture 3: The youtube screenshot from the promotional video with Doc for the '68 H/O. It's low quality, but note the heater hose routing wrapping towards the center.

I'm guessing this routing changed sometime after '68. My question is... if the heater hose wrapped around the oil fill tube towards the center, was there a clamp/bracket on the A-bodies that held the heater hose down to the intake manifold underneath the passenger side OAI snorkel? If so, does anybody have a picture of it? Even better, does someone have an extra laying around? As I mentioned, my PIM copy has no details of this...

Thanks!

In your center picture, there is a clamp that holds the heater hose down close to the intake manifold. It actually is held on top of the alternator bracket (on my '69 4-4-2 with A/C, that same clamp is placed on top of the A/C compressor bracket). Would that be what you are addressing?

Luke, Fusick,Inline & others sell a heater hose clamp that looks like the one in your big car engine compartment pic. They list it as fitting '68-'72 a/c cars but while it may fit '69 & up since the snorkel on those years points more to the pass side & it won't get in the way of the clamp,it definitely won't fit a '68 with a/c but it may fit your '68 without a/c.

Yes sir, that is the bracket I was asking about. Thanks for the response.

Thanks Rob! Appreciate the markup, and I have to place a Fusick order this week anyways. It didn't register to me that the clamp may actually be that tall, since you can't tell in the big car engine picture. I'll have to see how the heater hose routes with that clamp in place, it looks like it holds it right between the hot air riser adapter and the air cleaner body.

Is the heater hose preformed?

Good question. I doubt it, but I don't know... it seems to me a standard straight piece of hose will bend that route without too much of a hassle, I had a piece I was messing with yesterday.

Just looking at the pics I would say it is preformed. That would make fitment around obstacles easy. Check the parts book.

unfortunately, I don't have a parts book.

I found that Fusick does sell one... this appears to make more sense now...

Part #393162 from 1967 PIM B/C - for 1966-67 with A.I.R
The hose is not used in 68. The center pic above is from a 1967 big car.
I can sell you a reprint of parts book.
More than likely Olds used this hose to avoid obstacles on the H/O

So are you saying Fusick's catalog is wrong? It lists the 393162 as "1968 all except A/C" and lists that '69-72 with no A/C just use straight hose. They don't have any other options shown...

Thanks for the help. I'd be interested in the parts book reprint, PM/email me your price and shipping address again and I'll send payment.

The 393162 was never used according to my 69 and 68 parts book. This was only for the big cars with AIR.

Look at section 1-5 page 107 or 113 and tell me the part# for the hose pump to heater. Or post a pic.

ahhh. good catch, I missed that page last night.

P/N is 400955, see attached picture. It also shows no clamp.

Now I'll have to find one...

When I restored my '68 4-4-2 (original 400 engine), the heater hose I used was pre-formed and there was no clamp to hold it down. My '68 does not have A/C. The hose I had to use, however, was the one with the number 393162 stamped on it and I believe I got it from Fusick.

My '69 4-4-2 (original 400 engine) does have that clamp. The '69 is an A/C car and it uses a different, yet still pre-formed, hose (Fusick part number 404249).

A pic of my '68 is below. My '69 is currently being re-assembled at the shop and I don't have a pic of it as of yet (but I do know the clamp is there and it always was there!).

Of course, neither of my cars are OAI.

Thanks Randy, that's awesome info, appreciate the picture. I can't find a better molded hose than the Fusick one, wonder if it just has the wrong part number on it. Looks like it fits your car well. Doesn't look like it needs the clamp, either...

Side note: what upper radiator hose do you have on there? My car may have had the original upper/lower radiator hoses, but I have no way of proving it... appears to have a thin double white stripe all the way down it's length with a part number every 6 inches or so, and the wire clamps were staked into the ends of the hose. Seemed like that would have been an assembly line deal, but I guess some aftermarket company could have sold assemblies as well.

My upper radiator hose was also from Fusick, as I recall (it was 7-8 years ago when I finished the restoration). Fusick's part number is 402153. I've got the same hose coming for my '69.

The two inch foam sleeve as shown in Randy's '68 engine pic is supposed to be located at the alternator bracket with straight hose, to protect it from abrasion on the alt. bracket W/O AC.

Hmm, I thought I had it right on my 68 with AC. My hose comes out straight from the core, parallel to the engine, then turns under the AC compressor to the pump. The foam cushion is by the AC pump bracket. There is a clamp for the other hose coming off the control valve. Its attached the evap box. This was a fairly unmolested 2 owner, Z code, early build car when I bought it. It has some subtle differences from later and other plant cars but this isn't one of them. Never had the hose clamp as far as I can tell. It physically would not work anyway. I was the one who stripped the factory paint off the bracket. No hose clamp, no molded hose. Fusick says the HHC682AC clamp fits 68-72 but it doesn't list a molded heater hose for 68 with AC. The molded hose and the clamp go together. That omission leads me to believe 68s with AC were set up as mine is...no molded hose no clamp on AC bracket. So the term "fits" may be right but it isn't OEM for a 68 442 AC car.

Mine also lacks the AC relay mounted to the passenger side fender. I've been asking here for years if any one else has this same anomaly? I believe its unique to Fremont cars? At least the August/September builds. Mine also has the rubber seals above the headlight buckets pinched between the chrome and core support. Never seen another. Nobody repros the piece.

Does anyone have another source for the bypass hose? The Fusick hose is too thin. It swells when hot with RPMs and I don't trust it. The molded Fusick bypass hoses are no where near the thickness of the originals or old school service parts. The repro wire clamps bottom out before they have full mechanical clamping force between the hose and the nipples. The Dims are incorrect for one or both parts. I'm aware that new hoses are made from improved materials and are generally thinner today. I was forced to rummage around for some 30-40 year old hoses in serviceable condition. Ill have to examine the AIM closely and the car tonight. Ill snap some pictures.

The '68 442 w/AC, I did have, had the relay on the fender. Oshawa built. I have several '68 442's and I have not seen any with rubber seals above the headlight buckets. However I have not checked my W30.

Chris D. down here in Texas has a very early production Lansing built 68 Cutlass Holiday that still has those headlight bucket filler gaskets - the first I've ever seen. The car also has another very weird piece - the center A/C dash outlet has only one horizontal bar going across it. Will have to get a picture and post it here.

Mine has the one bar grill as well. 3rd week of Sept build, Fremont. Those gaskets never fit well. So I didn't include them after the resto. They made the plastic warp on the buckets and made it difficult for the screws to suck the support and buckets together with out pulling out the self tap threads. So they are in a box of original parts. In OK shape too.

Yellow the gaskets are right in you face. No need to disassemble to find them. I think the original intent was to seal the right & left hood edges from water? Early production rev update for the rest of the run. They must have had too much fun during assembly and said F this in the trash you go.

I have seen this complaint before... Gates, Dayco and AC Delco all have part numbers for the bypass hose in rockauto. I was probably just going to grab one of those, and not worry about the fancy stamped hose from a repro supplier. I believe that was the solution recommended in one of the resto threads, I can't remember where I saw it.

I vaguely recall seeing the rubber headlight to hood things on my '68 W30, but before I got it, the entire front end had probably been off and replaced. At the very least, the right fender was replaced. I don't remember much detail, and have not seen the part lately. I think I left it as I found it.

My '68 442 is a Nov(11A) build Lansing car & it doesn't have the a/c relay,my other '68 that I had back in '78 was a March build & it had the relay. I've had at least 8 '68s over the years, drivers, parts cars etc. & I've never seen one with those filler seals on the headlight housings. I lucked out with my by-pass hose as I had a 30 year old unused one from Napa(I used to run their machine shop back in '79) in my stash of parts. It's nice & thick just like the old GM ones The Fusick clamps I bought tightened up nicely on it.
