Hi, 2011 our car was finished from top to bottom everything has been replaced, that being said i went to fill the car up with gas Sunday thank god we went out there later that day and wow there was gas all over the floor, i got underneath to look and the gas tank the sending unit O ring was leaking at the bottom, back in 2011 to 2013 we filled the car probably 6 times no leaks at all, after that we only keep like 5 gallons in it because we usually just take it to the track so we don't want much gas in it, so the past 6 years its never been up to that half way point, just don't get it new tank and sending unit, the O ring must have shrunk ?? when i did this job back in 2011 i installed the sending unit on the floor then slammed the tank in the car, my question is now that the tank is in the car is there enough room to take that sending unit out to put the new o ring in or do i have to drop the tank ?? hopefully somebody out there knows, if i have to drop the tank that's ok !! thanks for looking john !!!!!!!!!
I have had to do this twice in the 30 years I have had the car, never dropped the tank. Had to get it as high in the air as I could to get at it but not all that hard to do, would have been easier with the socket for the tank ring.
here is the 67 service manual procedure , step 1 drain the tank below fuel level sender. Don't make the mistake I did ,when you think you have it low enough, drain more out, first Time I got a little covered in gas.

Nick. you have been a great deal of help for me, i cant thank you enough for posting all these things here to that i can see !! nick just want to make sure you got the back end of the car as high off the ground is this right, iam right with ya everything under there is new, i know its been 8 years since the Restoration the car is in our pole barn 90 percent of the time so nothing is rusted up at all, iam going to get my punches out and get that thing out of there and put in my new O ring when it shows up here i had to order it !! thanks nick !!
Yea, it's a pain to change out sending units. I've got a more modern car that the sending unit and fuel pump is all one unit. They had the wisdom of making an access hole in the floor of the car to access the unit however the fuel pump is 6" in diameter and they made the hole 5" in diameter. After a few times dropping the tank while I had the tank out I cut out the hole bigger and made a steel plate to cover the hole. Has to be safer than the rubber cover the factory made and I can now change the pump without dropping the tank. .
yes get the rear of the car as high as you can, if I had to do it again I think I would put some ramps under the front wheels so the angle would be less steep.
Just be patient and go slow .
We are used to pretending we have a Chevelle or Camaro when getting some resto parts.
