I get a rebuilt starter in a parts lot. I know it’s a 455 Olds starter, numbers on it are 1108418 with a build date of 4E16. I am wondering if anyone could tell me what this came off of, and what the build date means. Thanks

Are the numbers you give set out on a tag or stamped into the housing?
The part tag is an oval shaped and begins with a group of seven numbers then a blank space then a group of four more characters, these last four characters are the code for the build date as follllows: First number is one digit for the year -- 3 = 1963, 4 = 1964..., Second the letter represents the month-- A = January B = February C = March ... M= December, Third & Forth numbers are the day of the month (no 00 or > 31).
4 = 1964
E = May
16 = 16th
May 16, 1964
I do not believe Olds was producing a 455 c.i. engine in 1964? It was first offered in 1968.

Is it possible to be a 74? I know it is a 455 starter. I removed it from the engine myself. Just don’t know what the part number comes back to. No tag numbers are stamped right on the housing. Thanks

Could very well be 1974. This starter was used by GM for a number of years on a large number of makes/models
The field case with the stamp is from a 1974 corvette 350 with 4 speed trans. If it came off a 455 it has the wrong drive end housing for a vet. The vet would have a cast iron staggered hole mount housing. A 1974 date isn't worth a whole lot.
