69 and 70 cutlass ac

In the fall of 69 I bought a new 70 cutlass. The next summer I noticed the air from vents would remain cold after control lever was moved to vent, never thought much about it a the time. Now 45 rears later I pick up this 69 that does the same thing. no matter the position of selector, the compressor stays on til key sw is off. Turn switch back to acc and compressor is still off until selector moved to cool. The compressor should not run on heat or should it? help

Yes that is the way they made it to work, not sure why? Years ago I had a 70 with AC. Don't remember what I had to do exactly, but, you can remove the AC relay, and redue one of the wires, to make it shut off when you turn it to vent. Don't remember what I had to do, but I'm pretty sure I found the info, on 442.com. Check there. Or maybe someone on here can tell you. I think I made a copy, but will have to try to find.

Thanks so much for the info, I hate to chase dead rabbits.Maybe when my service manual arrives I can come up with a workaround.
