1972 Engine Vin Location
So I've been looking at a few 1972 Cutlass Supremes for sale and I want to verify that they are matching numbers cars, but I'm having trouble finding the Vin location on the engine. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks

Sure. Just remember that what you're looking for on the engine stamping pad is called the VIN Derivative. It's not the full VIN.
What it will have (for 72) is something like this:
32(Letter)XXXXXX. This translates to
3-Oldsmobile
2-1972 model year
(Letter)-Production plant. This could be M (Lansing), R (Arlington), Z (Freemont), or G (Framingham)
(XXXXXX) this should be exactly the same 6 numbers as the last 6 numbers of the VIN. That will tell you if the engine was the one the car was born with.
The best way to see the stamping pad is to take a pic with your cell phone and then try reading what's there. If the pad is all gunked up, use degreaser and a rag to clean it so you don't destroy any stampings.
If the car has a 350, it will likely also have a TH350 transmission. The same VIN derivative will be on that located on the left side just under the speedo head adapter.
This one is easy to see because there's no Alt or PS pump in the way.
This one is a 1975 engine (as also evidenced by the # 8 heads)
