Muffler choice?

Guys, What is you muffler choice for a convert? something that has great flow but not to load for a convertible. I have flow masters now but heard there are better choices for flow. I still what it to sound like a muscle car but I would like to hear the stereo too.

Thanks

Any kind of flow master would be my last choice.

I don't own a convertible, but would like to.

A turbo style by walker or others would be my choice.

We put a Magnaflow system on our '72. The mufflers that came with it sound ok, but at certain speeds there is "buzz" sound from them. We're going to try a pair of Walker mufflers next.

I have Walker Dynomax Ultra flows on mine. Quiet at cruise, loud when you want them to be.

If you like how your car sounds keep the Flowmasters. You won't see or feel any power increase even if you ran open exhaust. Enjoy your car, it looks nice. I run flowmasters too. I like them. Especially at idle.

Have a set of Magna-Flow's on my (stock pipes and manifolds) '70 442 very quiet until U let it breath. Neighbors say its as quiet as any new stock car....until I leave the subdivision ...glad they pointed that out.

You will see gains at the track. I did some testing of my own. back when my car was in the 14's in the 1/4 mile. With open headers (cutouts) it ran 14.00 , with mufflers 14.2's . I added an x pipe and ran it through the mufflers it went 13.86 . taking the mufflers off netted an extra tenth on a diffrent combination. you wont feel it but if you go to the track it makes a diffrence. As for mufflers i love the hooker aero chambers. Not like flow master and not like turbo mufflers. I plan on going to turbo (thrush) mufflers and finally adding tailpipes as my car has gotten to the point of being annoyingly loud with my current set up. Im adding cut outs after my x pipe so i wont loose performance at the track.

Yeah, pipes all the way to the rear bumper make a HUGE difference in how loud it is inside the car.

I sounded cool for the last 7 years but my main reason is to avoid the sound police. Got the cops called on me 2 times last summer.

Also how to use SEARCH...

This topic has been covered to death. Every single thread has three answers:

Walker Dynomax
Magnaflow
Flowmaster

The preferred choice pretty much goes with the age of the person writing the answer.

A lot depends on if you want to have a conversion with your partner as you mosey down the road, age, previous divorces and poor hearing has dictated that I pay more attention to the spouse next to me rather than be a bit of an exhibitionist. Sound stays the same but life dictates change.Adjust to your own life style.....Just me....Tedd

I know it's been beat to death. Myself included. I have ran most of them including the #1 pick and really like my pypes race pro 18" case (not 14") 2.5" straight through packed mufflers. No rumble. Nice inside and out until you hit it. A vert might like these. JMO
I run an H pipe. Hate the X for sound. Ricey. Been there also.

I run Flowmaster 40s but wish I had gone with something quieter. The drone at 1800 rpm is severe. I'm going to add an H-pipe this summer, but if that doesn't help, I'm pulling the F40s.

I'm running American Racing Headers Pure Thunder Series mufflers. From what Nick at ARH said, they have a similar design to the Borla XR-1 muffler. Below is a link where you can hear them.

Keeping in mind that sound is completely subjective, I prefer the Walker Dynomax. I do have a Magnaflow on my 62, mainly because it fit better than the comparable Dynomax, and it started out louder but has quieted over the years. I attribute that to the fiberglass packing getting coated with carbon (as opposed to my wife, who claims it's my failing hearing...). I'd never use a (no)Flowmaster, not only because of the obnoxious droning but also because they are regularly among the worst-flowing mufflers in published tests.

I always liked loud mufflers and was always changing them to make the car louder until someone told me I was deaf in one ear and couldn't hear out of the other! Maybe that's why I was going through starters like crazy.

Www.gardnerexhaust.com. They have some audio of their systems on there. Also a search online will get you to utube vids of different exhaust.

I have flow masters on my convertible,is it loud? Yes but I like the tone/sound.

I only drive the car on weekends and nice days if it was my daily driver it would drive me nuts and would have to make a change!

I run a set of the Ravin' mufflers on my 72. I believe they are el cheapo flowmasters. No crossover of any kind, it's a Midas custom dual job on an originally single pipe car. Louder than a normal car at all times, no drone, sounds pretty good. I'll replace it with a true dual system done right when I restore it here about ten years out.

For some reason I think glass packs only sound good on single pipe Fords.

I think the H-pipe is a big reason the flowmasters sound good on my car. I was told by my exhaust guy that the length of the tailpipe has a lot to do with the chambering sound from these mufflers. On my Vette there is no tailpipe. It still sounds badass though. It's all a matter of taste. I don't think the performance varies a heck of a lot from one to the other brand. Copper said he got .2 with a different set of mufflers. If the air isn't right, etc, those 2 tenths are gone for some reason. It's not a lot of time to be worth changing mufflers for IMO.

I might add it was not a muffler swap it was a pipe swap straight v. X pipe . I may add The diffrence between open headers and running through the mufflers with no crossover pipes was .23 . This sounds ubsurd but if you compare my fastest time with mufflers and straight pipes no tail pipes (14.23) to my pass with x pipe and mufflers no tail pipes 13.86 the gains are much more than .2 . The 14.23 pass was in cool weather and the 13.86 pass was in hot muggy weather . Later that season in the fall (cool weather ) the car was consistent in the 13.71 range which came about because of the fiberglass fenders and hood but those passes where also made through the mufflers. So the fiberglass netted me a .15 gain had I not gone fiberglass the car would have remained in the 13.86 range. Although that was long winded my point is that in my experience the x pipe was worth the hp. Gains imo when compared to my 1\4 mile passes through the mufflers . I don't know what guys say by the sound ricey (x pipes ) but they make power and I stand by that.
