69 442 Console Help

CO,

I am in the process of stripping down my 69 442 and interior is going well until I tried to remove the console. I removed the screws on the exterior of the console and it appears the only thing holding it in place are the 4 screws inside the actual box. They all are rusted and have nearly no profile left for a screwdriver. Any suggestions? Am I missing something?

Thanks
Sean

I looked back through your old posts and saw you were looking for a manual trans so I assume that's the console we're talking about. I would just drill out the heads of the screws and lift the console off. There are a total of 6 screws. The screw locations are shown in Section 1-1, page 312 of the 68 assembly manual. Probably a similar location in the 69 manual. Other than the front two screws the there are only the four in the glove box to remove.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. This car however is the 3 speed auto console. Do you happen to have the diagram handy?

There's a front mounting bracket that has screws going through the stainless/aluminum side trim strip. I'm not sure which ones they are but that's what i remember. The bracket is actually part of the shifter or bolted to the shifter. That should help locate them.

I found the diagram in the Assembly Manual and it appears to be a combination of the perimeter screws attaching the aluminum trim which are removed already and the 4 screws inside the box at the bottom. These are the ones that are corroded. I think I will have to drill out to remove the console.

Thanks everyone

Sean

Take the **** off the shifter
remove cross pin that holds shifter finger tee on, remove tee
then the shifter plate can come off, less likely to get damaged

If you don't have these

Alden 8530P Grabit Damaged Screw Remover 3 Piece Kit - Amazon.com Alden 8530P Grabit Damaged Screw Remover 3 Piece Kit - Amazon.com

maybe get some
Sears has 'em handy
Probably Shipwrek Tools also [HFT]
Sometimes you get lucky and they grip and the screw unscrews.

I think the Grab-it is what I will need considering the screws are virtually rusted over. Thanks

Be careful with the screws inside the console storage bin. A lot of times people will pull on the console and the plastic sections of the console around the screws will break off. When that happens, you'll have a console with larger screw holes in there that will need to be fixed and it may never be as strong. Make sure the screw heads are completely removed by drilling so you don't damage the console itself.
