hey guys, im trying to find out some production numbers for my 68 442. from what i can find and of the thousands of 442s made, approx 5000 verts, 3000 vert autos. thats about as low as i can find.

where/how does everybody find that cars are 1 of X made??

a list of what my is...
kind of base
ocean turquoise
auto
non a/c
white top
black int.
no fender stripe
ive seen some with the antenna on the front fender, mine is on the rear quarter

not sure of availabe options other than power int and a/c lol

 

I have a k code 442 3 speed manual some 150 made or something. Yes 68 produced the most 442 converts 5100 something i believe but def over 5000.
Aside from there is no breakdown of colors or how many came with other than drive train specs.
Most antenns in front - power antenna in the rear unless installed aftermarket.

According to my figures, there were 5,142 4-4-2 convertibles made in model year 1968. There were also 4,726 4-4-2 sport coupes and 26,773 4-4-2 holiday coupes produced for model year 1968, for a total of 36,641 4-4-2 models. Other than that, other particular break-downs are not available.

I've wondered about certain specifics for my '68 4-4-2 convertible as well. It came from the factory with a bench seat. Ads in Hemmings Motor News in the late 1980s used to say that only 201 '68 4-4-2 convertibles were built with bench seats. I don't know where that number came from, or where it went, but numbers like that just don't seem to be available right now for Oldsmobiles. Maybe someday someone will open an archive somewhere and find all of these numbers but, until now, we just have to live with what we've got!

Also, in looking at the picture of your car and the location of the 4-4-2 numbers on the fender, I'm thinking that your car did have the W36 stripes at one time but were removed, perhaps during a re-paint. It just might be the angle of the picture that gives that appearance (note that the 4-4-2 numbers on the fenders were put in a different location for the W36 stripe, than for cars without the W36).

Mr Smooth's fender numbers are in the standard position not the position for the W36 stripe. If you zoom the pic you can see how far away from the door they are.

Like everyone has said. There isn't much available for production records. I'm amazed how few 68 verts seem to be around considering, as Dean said, that they were the highest production for that era.

 

There's a few around, hiding in the garage, waiting for cash to flow
with $$$ paint jobs and $650 radiator caps, it may be a while yet.

Did you check and see if you have the std-442's OG auto trans or the W30's OW trans?

OG standard turbo 400 for 442s; OW turbo 400 tranny for w-30 cars.
Your tranny will have one of those tags

My numbers jive with Randy's totals. I have 373, 1968, 4477 Cutlass Club Coupes with a 3 speed stick. Has this been updated to 422? just verifyin

Your 373 is correct, and I have now corrected my previous post. Glad you caught that. I mistakenly pulled the 422 from 1967!
However, Randy still has 54 more Holiday Coupes than I have. I suspect he snuck them out the back door when they were new.

 

Haa Kurt the fat finger or dyslexic gods are with you...For 68, 442, Holidays, I have 26,773 total. 769 3spd, 9433 4spd and 16571 ATs. I think you or someone may have transposed the 16571 ATs to 16517...no? Hence the elusive 54 MIA never made "back door" cars. This total isnt accounting for the 1426 W30 Holiday (4487) Coupes.

 

Good eye, I expect this difference to be the transposition you suggest. Not sure at this point which is correct, but the 16571 very well be correct as I just have a secondary source I've kept at work here, not noticing that it may not be correct. I'll check it out.

TH400 3-spd auto for BB cars
TH425 3-spd auto for Toronado/Motorhome

Notice the "74-OM" trans tag. That's what you are looking for on your trans. Typically covered in grunge. Clean it with oil [WD40] and a plastic toothbrush or similar so as not to damage the finish. Yours should say 68 OG or 68 OW perhaps.

 

Ah "it" happens. Usually its me with the fat finger dyslexic affliction. Everything I have has 16571. I do have a typo in the "fact sheet" from a 25 year old Year One catalog. They days before the glossy pages! Its off by one car. It says 26772 vs 26773 for 68, 4487s, and I just caught that! I like the way we can all learn and have fun with our knowledge here and not get fat heads (well most of us). Its all about the cars not our egos.
