#1 is the frontmost cylinder on the Left (Driver's) side.

And the firing order is counterclockwise. I've made the mistake of putting it in the right order but going in the wrong direction!

You'll have to figure out where it goes on the cap by getting your number 1 cylinder on top dead center of the compression stroke. That's easiest to do with two people, but if your by yourself remove the spark plug, screw it back in just a little, so air can escape around the threads. Then put a large socket on the crank pully bolt and turn the motor over. When you hear air pressure coming out around the spark plug go until the timing tab says your on top dead center. Then remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. Put your #1 spark plug wire at that location and you should be close enough to start the motor. Then you can adjust the timing to the proper location.

That's my method, Eric or one of the other guys can add to that.

But if the distributor has ever been removed the #1 plug may not be in the same location as Allan's drawing. So I think you should verify the location on the cap.

There should also be a mark on your harmonic balancer that you can line up with the gauge on the front of the engine. I know my 350 has one. I'm not sure if my 455 does or not?

Yes, but that will line up on both the intake and the compression strokes.

Still easy to figure. If it doesn't work on one, you go to the opposite side!

That reminds me of a story. I used to be into Dirt Track racing and the guy who used to help me with my car asked if he could bring a friend down into Pit Row with us and I said "ok". Problem was I had to listen to him say all day long "the thing to do........the thing to do.......the thing to do........"

I was about two comments away from telling security this idiot had jumped the security rail and was harrassing me......
