Question 1972 Olds Dealer Showroom Album

Not talking about a simple brochure here that was free for the taking .....

But one of the thick binder/albums.

Is it true that these are pretty rare & more tough to find vs other years ?.

What would be a fair price for one that's in nice shape ?.

Yes because the dealers were told to trash the pages and reuse the binder for '73

I'd say a fair market value to be in the $200 - $400 range depending on how complete it is. Technical bulletins, paint chips, interior samples, complete line up descriptions and otherwise the whole nine yards to be at the upper end of my "guesstimate"

I paid 225 for mine 4 years ago. I also bought the accompanying SPECS guide and the 1972 complete service guild binder.

Complete 72 books are more rare as Scot indicated why. Prior to that, Olds would issue new binders every year.

Do you have one and want to sell, or looking to buy one that's for sale. If you need info on what should be in it, LMK and I'll itemize it for you. Mine is complete, right down to the paint / fabric / stripe sections.

Scot - The technical bulletins and others are in the black binder TECHNICAL BULLETINS AND SERVICE GUILD 1972

How many? A ton! Some are volume 21 (September 71-December 71; as you know the model year starts in 71) The rest are volume 22 - January 72 - September 72) Included is a section that has the Service policies and procedures manual for 1972 models, A section (pink) with Dealer Technical Bulletins, a section (blue) with Dealer Information Bulletins, and a section (gold) with Product Campaign Bulletins. There are even sample letters in the 'Campaign' section for dealers to use as a template for service recalls.

I'll try to remember that. You know how long it took me to find it?? I actually have 2 Service guild manuals for 72, but one is very thin on its contents. That's why I jumped all over this one like a hobo on a ham sandwich when I found it.

FWIW, the incomplete one also came with the 'back half' of the Dealer Ordering Guide that started this thread. + a couple of service items for 73 Omega and 73 Cutlass.

I thought these were rare, but I couldn't recall where I read/heard that from ... so I wanted to be sure.

I actually have one here I was thinking of parting with.

I haven''t taken any pics yet ...

But here's what it consist of :

1) The binder itself is a chocolate brown.

The front cover has an Olds "Rocket" on it with "OLDSMOBILE" spelled out beneath.

The binder (part that would be facing you when placed on a bookshelf) has "Oldsmobile Colors And Fabrics" in gold lettering.

1) Interior section which includes 2 pages on options & accessories at the end.

2) Exterior color chip cards/sheets.

This has no rings to attach in the binder ... it is a self contained spiral wire type deal that is @ 11.5 x 3.5 in size.

3) Accent Paint Stripes card/sheet for intermediate models (clear with stripe colors)

Approx 11 x 4 in size.

4) Vinyl Roof Colors.

This is a single card/page measuring @ 11.25 x 4 3/8th's.

Aside from some expected patina ... most of it is in very nice shape except for a few of the exterior paint chips.

Thanks for the info so far .....

Just trying to get an idea of what I have may be worth & if I should part with it or not.

This is what you're saying in pictures. I use mine all the time for references. It has more historical value to me than the money I paid for it. Last month there were 2 I believe on ebay that were going for around 225-250.

Wish I had the full product info vs just the interior section in regards to the big pages.

I'll have to get some pics together of what I have.

So you're saying you have only to the end of the pictures? (The Accessories tab) You're missing the second half of the book? Post what you find. I believe I have a spare set of the section you're missing. There are 141 extra pages of info behind that tab.

The interior section is 54 pages incl front & back cover(s).

Those option/access pages are marked 52 & 53.

I guess what I have is literally just the color selections.

That seems to make sense ... as that's what the binder itself says.

Seems like what you have is a complete package that includes vehicle descriptions - specs - selling points I presume etc etc etc, not including the service & TSB stuff.

Perhaps that was part of a separate binder/album back then vs all stuffed into the color selections album ?.

PS-

Have to charge up my camera.

Yes, the 1st 54 pages are the color stuff just as you described. Also has little cloth/vinyl samples on interior trim. The Service Guild info is a completely separate binder. The section you're missing is indeed the selling features, tech stuff etc that was part of the guide. It was not something that was just stuffed in. If you look at the first page in the binder it will have the layout of the book. Clearly shows that there are more than 54 pages in this compilation. Here's a few pics.

Each tab identifies the Product knowledge and features associated with it:

What's New for 72 - pages 1-12
Individual Model Equipment - pages 13-16
Intermediate Models - pages 17-34
Full Size Models - pages 35-54
Cruiser Models - pages 55 -62
Special Use Equipment - pages 63 - 68
Equipment Features Body (Fisher) pages 69 -78
Exterior - pages 79 - 86
Interior - pages 87 - 104
Power Train - pages 105 - 124
Chassis - pages 125 - 134
Index - pages 135 - 139
Page 140 - for Notes and Comments
Page 141 - tab for 'Bulletins' - nothing behind it.

Problem is ....

First page in the album is the cover of the color sections.

I guess I never questioned the fact nothing else was in there being the binder just says "Oldsmobile Colors And Fabrics"

I have some other non-Olds stuff where it's broken down into (2) binders.

1) Product Portfolio.
2) Color/Int Selections etc.

I need to take some pics & see if anyone wants it.

Yeah, I would like to see what you have. Here's what the first page should actually look like, then it's followed by the Interiors section

Ok got the camera fired up.

What you see is all there is.

Do note ... I did not take a pic of every single page of the interior section as it's pretty self explanatory (interior pics with mini fabric samples).

I also made sure to take pics of the couple of paint chips that got damaged at some point.

It's only (2) of those that are all that bad & it's at the end of the booklet in the full size color section ... Bamboo - Matador Red & the backside of the Nutmeg chip a lil' bit.

Also some minor staining/discoloration can be seen on the 1st page of the interior section.

Anyone feel free to revisit the opinion of value on this ... now that you can actually see it.

Obviously ... I realize it won't be at the higher end.

But I don't think what I have is too shabby.

It's actually in quite nice shape other than what I mentioned above.

So ...

On to the pics (2) batches of 14 each.

1st batch :

So that does it for now .....

Again, I made sure to take pics of the crucial flaws.

While I'm sure I could pick out a few more minor imperfections here or there .....

The worst of it is shown in the pics above.

I'd like to put this up in the for sale section.

So now that some pics are up .....

Any further thoughts on value would be appreciated.

Thanks.

This site has a retarded server!!
2X I've tried to post a reply. Both times it got lost in the hunt for the stupid server. I'm copying this just in case it does it again

Summary: Not as valued as full Dealer selling guide. Has less info and spine is specific to contents. Some damage to pages and color plates (I checked mine they are still pristine). Based on having only half the info of a dealer selling guide and general condition of contents, I would suggest somewhere around 85.00 - 100.00

Anyway that's just my opinion of the valuation.

You still have a nice piece of Oldsmobile memorabilia. You planning to sell here or on fleabay?

Darn ...

Was a lot more enthused at closer to $200.

In all honesty ... I'm pretty sure I have at least that much in it.

I'd prefer to try selling it here 1st if someone would throw the right number at me.

Out of @ 5-6 listings on eBay within the last year (only really 3 if you include re-lists) .....

Only (1) proved to be beneficial ... & these were items that IMHO should have really got some attention.

Did you ever have any intentions of parting with that extra/2nd section (Dealer Selling Guide) you said you have ?.

I know what you mean. But if I used the valuation of your book being worth what you have into it? Mine would be an easy 450.00 and the market would not support that. Reality is the binder you have may have been overpriced when you bought it. These binders don't come up for sale all that often, but they are out there. I've also seen them for earlier model years.

I would consider selling the 2nd section I have. If you want to make an offer on it, send me a PM and we'll see what goes from there. I had also thought about buying yours too. I just don't need 2 complete sets.
